Why did you join seadrill?

I’d always wanted to get into HR and just before joining, I’d started my Masters in HR Management at Liverpool John Moores University. When seadrill came to Liverpool, the fact that it’s a global company made it really stand out for me as being a great place to develop my HR career.

What’s the atmosphere like in the office?

It’s an open plan office and the Directors and Heads sit amongst their teams, so that helps with communication and openness. We organise a lot of social events to get everybody involved. When people have moved here from other regions and countries, they don’t necessarily have friends or family with them. So, it’s very much like a family network here as well. We do little things like, for example, when it’s someone’s birthday we get them cake and a card.

What’s the main challenge for the HR team?

Having the Shared Service Centre here in Liverpool, in HR we need to make sure that everyone keeps communication levels up and that we liaise frequently with our regions, so that they know we’re here for them as much as they are for us. Ultimately, it’s about keeping those relationships and those networks close.

If you’re looking to develop your career with a global company this is a great company to do that, aided by the continuous support of your managers and colleagues. seadrill isn’t afraid to give you the responsibility and autonomy to be able to grow.

I’m the sort of person who likes a challenge, and there’s always something different to look into here.”

What was your background before you joined?

I used to work for a big professional services company, but I was looking to move into industry. So, when seadrill came to Liverpool I thought the Oil and Gas industry sounded interesting, and when I came for the interview it all just had the right feel to it.

What does your role involve?

I’ve been looking after all of the Mexican legal entities. Before we set up the Shared Service Centre, all of the regions had different ways of working so I flew out and I found out how Mexico did things. Everyone spoke to each other about how different regions operated and brought it all together to come up with the best practice. That’s been really interesting.

What do you enjoy most about working here?

Every month I feel like I’ve learnt something new or encountered a new challenge. There’s just a lot going on. Also, it’s really good working with people from different parts of the world. The social scene is absolutely brilliant here, and that’s another one of the great things about the job.

What would you say to someone thinking about a career with seadrill?

It’s a great step from wherever you’re coming from. They’re very keen to develop everyone, so they’re always looking at creating new opportunities. And you’ll be working with the best bunch of people. There’s definitely a culture of helping each other out if you’re unsure of anything. That’s another advantage. The senior management is very approachable and is always ready to help.

seadrill invests in external training, but you pick up a lot on the job too. I’m learning every day."

Why do you enjoy working at seadrill?

It’s quite amazing what the company actually does, with all the technology and equipment on the rigs. Obviously, as accountants, we’re not hands-on with the rigs, but it’s good to understand how they work. I didn’t have any experience of the Oil and Gas industry before I came in, so it’s been a big learning curve, but we do get formal training and development on the industry.

How does seadrill support your development?

I’m being promoted to a new role, Senior Legal Entity Accountant role in the AMA region, and seadrill has provided the opportunity to complete the CIMA Certificate in Global Business Services. seadrill is quite flexible too, so as long as you get your work done, you can take a few hours in the working week to study. And if you want to get involved in a specific area of the business, seadrill is happy for you to do that, to grow your experience. You can go on rig visits too.

What’s been your best moment so far?

I was looking after the Brazil region when I first joined, so I went out to Rio almost as soon as I started. I’ll probably be going out to Dubai at some point, to meet the team there too.

What would you say to someone thinking about a career with seadrill?

It’s a market-leading global business, but it’s not like you’re walking into somewhere that’s stuck in their ways. They want to continually improve, and help you do the same, so they definitely listen to your ideas. I can’t think of a bigger or better business to be working for.
